Sheep

At Chatsworth Pastoral, we proudly produce two types of high quality lambs:

1st X lambs   (Merino ewes crossed with Border Leicester rams)

To produce 1st X lambs, we initially source young, large-framed merino ewes with exceptional growth potential, carefully selected from some of the best Riverina flocks. From these sheep we breed our own large framed, well covered 1st X ewes. The result is a high quality, productive flock that we’re extremely proud of, with it’s success a direct result of the high quality ewes and Border Leicester rams, sourced only from the top studs.

While most of the 1st X ewes are retained from our prime lamb breeding program, we do offer a representative selection of 14 month old ewes, surplus to our needs, for sale each year. These ewes serve as top-tier breeding stock for those looking to improve their own breeding programs.

The wether portion of our 1st X lambs are given time to grow out, and are sold at 8 – 10 months of age, in prime condition, after most of our 2nd X lambs have been sold.

2nd X Lambs  (Ist X ewes crossed with Poll Dorset rams)

We invest in top quality Poll Dorset rams from a range of respected local studs, bringing ideal genetics into our prime lamb breeding program. We carefully select rams for their frame, shape and length to ensure that their offspring – produced by our XB ewes – inherit the best growth profile to meet local demand.

Our ewes are well nourished in normal seasons with ample feed from both natural grasses and fodder crops. During drier seasons, we supplement their diet with grain and grain-based feeds, ensuring their protein and energy requirements are met to maintain themselves and support their growing lambs.

The fastest growing lambs in our program are usually sold as sucker lambs. In summer the younger remaining lambs are weaned and shorn, giving them time to grow out fully before they are sold in autumn at their prime.
